I am currently looking for a diverse range of participants to participate in testing a new piece of work called The Light That Entangles (TLTE). This is one of series of works that I am calling Entangled Instruments, these are digital musical instruments that are designed to be played by more than one person at a time. I am interested in the how the interface and underlying technology effect co-player experience.
TLTE is designed for three people, so you would be playing with two others. You can sign up individually or with two friends, either way I will be there throughout.
User-Study Details
Date: Friday 12th December 2025
Time slots: 10-30, 12:00 and 14:30 and 16:00
Location: Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed
The whole process will fit into one hour. The study will involve playing TLTE for about 20 minutes, then reflecting on the experience through a short interview. Both the playing and discussion will be videoed. You do not need any experience in music technology, or in playing musical instruments to take part. This would be of interest to anyone interested in gaming, collaboration or dance and expressive movement. Taking part in this study would also be a great opportunity for anyone interested in alternative musical interfaces to reflect on how gesture can be translated into musical control.
LIGHT-SENSITIVITY: The Light That Entangles uses bright LEDs that sometimes flash and pulse. Although this is less than 3 times a second you should be aware of this. Sun-glasses will be available for those that want them, or bring your own – some players have simply worn them as they felt it enhanced the experience.

Thank you taking the time to read this! I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Please get in touch if you are interested. s.symons@sussex.ac.uk
